Yeah. It is kind of true that without research, there is no new IP, in at least for research institutes, where the most of the IP lies in the researchers themselves with the only common readable output are papers, patents and students. One key area that is often not measured is know-how. It is important for labs to try build up their know-how and keep it within the labs, while adding in new know-how from new areas. This know-how would help build brand name for the lab, while hopefully help attracts more talents and grants for the lab. 😉

For others entities like NGOs/companies, there are many forms of IP such as brand, data and copyright. Different entities capitalize different mixture of IP to target different market segments. I would like to think that moving forward, different labs could mimic the same to differentiate themselves from each other, other that the area of research that they are doing.
